What is Diverticulitis - High Carb Health

What is Diverticulitis?

Millions of people suffer from the formation of small pouches called diverticula in their digestive tract each year. These pouches are caused naturally and are formed when certain weak spots in the digestive tract protrude to form pouches that have a diameter of 0.6 to 0.8 centimetre. This long term condition is known as diverticulosis.

Over time these pouches or diverticula are subjected to regular bowel movement. Due to the wear and tear caused by these natural activities, these pouches develop lacerations, swelling, or infections. When this phenomenon occurs, a person is said to be suffering from diverticulitis. The inflammation occurs in 10 to 25% of the diverticulosis cases due to a bacteria called Escherichia Coli.

Diverticulitis Diagnosis

Medical professionals generally diagnose diverticulitis with the help of CT scans, colonoscopy, or blood tests. There are certain preventive measures that one can take if there is a history of diverticulitis in the family.
